Legacy applications can expose your organisation to significant risks:
Resilience and Security: Outdated systems are more vulnerable to attacks and weak in data governance.
Innovation Stagnation: Old technology is hard to maintain, slows down innovation, and locks data in proprietary systems.
High Costs: Upgrading old systems is expensive and often doesn’t deliver the value users expect.
Running outdated hardware also incurs increasing costs as systems age.
Why Modernise?
Maintaining and upgrading legacy applications is challenging and costly. Our AWS Application Modernisation service offers a comprehensive approach to evaluate all your applications and determine the best path forward, balancing business risks and rewards.

Through architecture, development and operations experience, Integral analyse and review your current applications and work out the right path forward that will deliver the most benefit to your organisation.
Our approach
Our experienced team will take an Application Portfolio Management view of your organisations landscape. We will look at your applications through a lens of business value, and technical complexity, then assess each application to determine the investment your company should be making in each application.
During the technical assessment of each application, we will look at the Technical Health, and Technical Fitness of the application, while also considering the role of the application in your companies value chain.
We look at the long term role of the application in delivering value, and provide guidance on where you should retire or replace an application, or look at migrating the application to AWS. Migration isn’t a simple decision and there are many choices in how you approach this. We will look at whether it’s appropriate to rehost on cloud, rearchitect or refactor to take advantage of cloud services, or rebuild to modernise your application for the long term. In some cases we will recommend a multistage approach to reduce your immediate risk, and then take advantage of additional cloud value in removing and modernising your application so that it is easier to maintain, can scale with your business, and deliver quicker changes that allow you to innovate.
Our review process will be done through a series of structured workshops.
These workshops will look at:
- Your current application landscape, what applications do you have, who owns them in your organisation, how do they fit into your business.
- Your current hosting, network, infrastructure, storage, including databases.
- How do you integrate your applications, how dependent on each other are they.
- Look at the technology health of each application, how easy is to add new features, how supportable are they, how do you deploy them, do you have disaster recovery plans.
- How secure are your applications, are there concerns about the resilience and security of the applications, and the hosting of these.
- Assess the role of applications in your value chain, how important are they to the operation of your business, how much use to they get, who uses them, how does your business operate if they stop working.
- What future plans do you have, what is your IT strategy, where do you want to host your applications, does your strategy align with your business goals.
We then use this information to assess your applications and do a review against the AWS 7 Rs framework, giving you an idea of how complex it is to take action, and help prioritise these actions. We will develop a roadmap with you that implements the recommendations, fits within your budget, and addresses critical issues quickly.
Repurchase (drop and shop)
Switch to a different product, typically by moving from a traditional license to a SaaS model. Example: Migrate your customer relationship management (CRM) system to Salesforce.com.
Rehost (lift and shift)
Move an application to the cloud without making any changes to take advantage of cloud capabilities. Example: Migrate your on-premises Oracle database to Oracle on an EC2 instance in the AWS Cloud.
Replatform (lift and reshape)
Move an application to the cloud, and introduce some level of optimization to take advantage of cloud capabilities. Example: Migrate your on-premises Oracle database to Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) for Oracle in the AWS Cloud.
Refactor/re-architect
Move an application and modify its architecture by taking full advantage of cloud-native features to improve agility, performance, and scalability. This typically involves porting the operating system and database. Example: Migrate your on-premises Oracle database to the Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible Edition.
Retain (revisit)
Keep applications in your source environment. These might include applications that require major refactoring, and you want to postpone that work until a later time, and legacy applications that you want to retain, because there’s no business justification for migrating them.
Retire
Decommission or remove applications that are no longer needed in your source environment.
Relocate (hypervisor-level lift and shift)
Move infrastructure to the cloud without purchasing new hardware, rewriting applications, or modifying your existing operations. This migration scenario is specific to VMware Cloud on AWS, which supports virtual machine (VM) compatibility and workload portability between your on-premises environment and AWS. You can use the VMware Cloud Foundation technologies from your on-premises data centers when you migrate your infrastructure to VMware Cloud on AWS. Example: Relocate the hypervisor hosting your Oracle database to VMware Cloud on AWS.
What we deliver
An assessed, prioritised and estimated backlog of your applications.
An actionable roadmap, with a clear path to migrate and modernise all your applications.
And if you want more than a backlog, we can provide a detailed assessment of each of your applications.
While we assess your application, we will collaborate with you through workshops, daily stand-ups and showcases of progress so you have full visibility.
Want to go further than Discovery?
We can then set up an AWS Landing Zone for you and provide a Proof of Concept to modernise one of your applications.
This will demonstrate how you configure AWS for your applications and show you how complex it is to modernise an application. We’ll work with you to pick an application that demonstrates how you modernise and delivers value to your organisation.
